Coal's terminal decline continues; wind and solar generation soar
US renewable generation from wind, solar, and hydro overtook coal for the first time in 2022.
Combined wind, solar, and hydro made up a record 20% of all utility-scale generation last year. Coal-fired generation continued to plunge back toward half-century lows, with another 13GW of retirements further cementing coal’s diminished share of the power mix.
