Texas now produces nearly twice as much electricity from renewables as from coal
Coal capacity factors crumbling to renewables and gas; wind and solar machines go brrrr
Texas wind and solar farms generated nearly twice as much electricity as coal plants did last year. Renewables now make up nearly a third of the Texas power mix.
ERCOT annual average power production from wind and solar reached a record-high 15GW in 2022 on the back of steady wind capacity additions and booming solar installments. Coal generation in Texas remained near its lowest level in at least three decades, even in a year where Henry Hub brushed $10/MMBtu.
The chart below shows 365-day trailing average power production from wind, solar, and coal generators in ERCOT. ERCOT renewable generation first surpassed coal on an annual basis in 2019.
